Dartmoor walks from Haytor and Belstone
Dartmoor offers open moorland, granite tors and a change of pace from the coast around Paignton. A guided walk gives you a way to explore with a leader while learning about the landscape and its history. The walks described here meet at Haytor and Belstone, two different places on the moor. Arrange your own transport to the meeting point and check the route before setting out.
Conditions can change during a walk. Bring suitable footwear and clothing, check the forecast and discuss any questions about the terrain with the organiser before booking. The coast and the moor need separate plans, even if you visit both during the same stay.

Guided Dartmoor walks
Compare walks at Haytor and Belstone, including their different meeting points.
Haytor: a guided introduction
The Haytor walk meets at the National Park Visitor Centre at Haytor Vale. Its guided exploration includes historical interpretation from the New Stone Age to the present, with information about Bronze Age artefacts and Roman influence. Transport to Dartmoor, parking charges, food and drinks are separate. Check the details of your selected date and give yourself time to find the meeting point.
This option suits a visitor who wants a guide to add context to the moorland scenery. Ask about the route and walking conditions if you need to assess whether it fits your party. A guide can interpret the landscape, but you still need clothing and shoes appropriate for a day outdoors. Carry what you need for the conditions rather than relying on coastal weather as a guide.
Belstone: tors and moorland stories
The Belstone walk meets at Belstone Car Park near Okehampton. A qualified hill and moorland leader guides the walk, which includes visits to Bronze Age stone circles, stories and exploration of tors. Safety equipment is included; transport to Belstone, meals, drinks and personal clothing and walking footwear are separate. Read the group and booking details for your chosen date.
Haytor and Belstone are not interchangeable meeting points. Before comparing times, locate each place and decide how you will get there and back. A guided activity beginning on Dartmoor should not be treated as a transfer from Paignton or Torquay. The travel guide helps with the wider arrival plan, while the tour listing supplies the meeting instructions.
Weather, access and military areas
Check the forecast for the moor before leaving and be ready to change plans if conditions are unsuitable. Wind, rain and visibility affect a walk differently from a sheltered visit to town. Tell someone your independent plans, carry suitable layers and make sure your footwear is appropriate for uneven ground. Ask the guide what to bring for the route and season.
Parts of Dartmoor are used for military training. Check the current firing information before an independent walk. Red flags or lamps mean that the affected area must not be entered. Keep to the instructions on the ground and choose another route when access is restricted. The Princetown Visitor Centre has been closed since October 2025, so do not rely on it for a visit.
Ponies, dogs and the landscape
Dartmoor ponies are part of the landscape, but they are animals rather than attractions to approach. Do not feed or touch them. Give animals space and keep gates as you find them. If travelling with a dog, check the national park's current guidance and the rules for your chosen walk before booking. Keep dogs on a lead near livestock and from 1 March to 31 July. On CROW access land during that period, use a fixed lead no longer than 2 metres. If cattle chase your dog, release it and call it back when safe.
For a different outdoor day, compare the beaches around Paignton or see the coast on a Torquay boat trip. These activities have their own weather and access considerations. The seasonal guide helps you combine them without assuming that every service runs on every date.
