Paignton accommodation: choosing an area

Paignton accommodation can put you close to the pier and promenade, near a different beach or within reach of transport around Torbay. The useful question is not which area wins a ranking, but which journeys you want to make each day. Look at the actual address, the route to your chosen beach and the practical terms of the property before deciding.

Paignton Sands, Goodrington and Preston each offer a different starting point for the coast. Torquay and Brixham are also connected with Paignton by bus. Use our transport guide alongside the beach comparison to understand the routes you may use.

Places to stay in Paignton near the seafront

The area around Paignton Sands puts the pier and promenade at the centre of your plans. The council lists level approaches to the promenade and harbour, with ramps north and south of the pier. Check the route from a particular property, as an individual entrance or pavement can have different access needs.

Waterfront works affect how you arrive. A council notice dated 18 September 2026 says the middle and southern Esplanade have been closed to vehicles and parking suspended there since 21 September 2026. Pedestrian access remains, and work was expected to continue until early January 2027. Ask your accommodation about current unloading and access arrangements.

Goodrington, Preston and Broadsands

Goodrington has its own beach and park setting. Routes from Youngs Park and Quay West lead towards the north and south beach areas, followed by steps or ramps. Think about the route between your address and the part of the beach you want to use, especially if you carry equipment or need step-free access.

Preston offers a promenade and beach setting, with Colin Road listed as a nearby parking area. Waterfront work also matters when choosing a location here, so ask about the current approach rather than assuming that all facilities are in their usual positions. Broadsands has a car park behind the beach and a level promenade, while access onto the sand can be difficult via steps.

Torquay accommodation and travel around the bay

A base in Torquay may be convenient if you plan to spend time around its harbour, Babbacombe or other attractions there. Paignton is another option if the pier, beaches and railway are central to your itinerary. Route 12 connects Torquay, Paignton and Brixham; check the stop nearest your particular address and the current timetable.

For a visit that includes Dartmouth, Greenway or Dartmoor, consider how you will make each separate journey rather than assuming a direct connection from your door. The railway guide explains the route to Kingswear and the separate passenger ferry to Dartmouth.

Parking, accessibility and dogs

Before booking, ask whether parking belongs to the property, whether a space needs reserving and what conditions apply. Public parking has its own rules and charges. If you travel with a large vehicle, check any height restrictions and whether you can reach the entrance during waterfront works.

Ask for details of steps, lifts, bathroom access and the route from the entrance if these affect your stay. Beach facilities vary too. If travelling with a dog, confirm the property's own rules and check the destination. Dogs are excluded from Paignton, Preston, Broadsands and Goodrington South beaches from 1 May to 30 September; Goodrington North allows dogs throughout the year. Dogs must be on a lead on the Goodrington promenade.

Match the location to your itinerary

Write down the places you most want to visit and check how you would reach them from the actual address. A beach-focused day has different needs from an early train connection or a visit to an attraction. Allow for luggage, the weather and any mobility requirements rather than relying only on a map distance.

Review the property's own payment, cancellation and arrival terms before committing. For ideas beyond the immediate seafront, see things to do in Paignton. If your trip depends on a seasonal service, check its dates first and then choose a base that makes the journey practical.
